How the Writing Pathway is Transforming Writing Instruction: Insights from Real Teachers

by Roel Concepcion

Teaching writing is one of the most challenging — but important — parts of K-12 education. National data shows that 3 out of 4 students are not proficient writers by 8th grade. Teachers often lack the training, resources, and time to effectively teach writing skills.

In response to this crisis, Teaching Lab has developed a new AI-powered tool called the Writing Pathway. It provides an online scope and sequence for teaching writing in any subject, grades 3-12.

Implementing The Writing Pathway in Your Classroom

Recently, a panel of teachers who have been piloting the Writing Pathway in their classrooms shared their experiences with the tool. Here are some of the key takeaways:

The Writing Pathway fills key gaps in writing instruction by:

  • Providing explicit instruction and practice in foundational sentence-level skills

  • Generating content-specific writing prompts with the click of a button

  • Creating exemplars of grade-appropriate writing for students to analyze

  • Chunking the writing process into manageable steps

  • Facilitating daily writing practice

What Teachers Are Saying

For Haley Ward, a 7th grade social studies teacher, the Writing Pathway enabled her to quickly find grammar and sentence construction mini-lessons to address gaps she noticed in her students' writing. "The Pathway made it much easier for me to tailor assignments to [English learners'] level," she said.

8th grade ELA teacher Laura Asher said the Writing Pathway has been a "low lift" way to differentiate writing instruction, especially for her English learners and students with IEPs. She appreciates how the tool generates grade-appropriate exemplars, saving her hours of prep time.

Logan Green, who teaches both ELA and social studies, uses the Writing Pathway to incorporate writing into his history lessons. "I'm working on English skills and the kids don't realize it," he said. He loves how it facilitates short daily writing practice: "Writing every day can be two sentences at the start of class."

Getting Results

While many teachers are wary of AI, the Writing Pathway employs AI in a teacher-facing way, as a time-saving tool that allows teachers to focus their energy where it matters most.

As education increasingly recognizes writing as a critical skill across all subjects, tools like the Writing Pathway will be key to finally moving the needle on writing proficiency.
