Jian Liu (刘健)

Jian Liu (刘健) is an adjunct Assistant Professor of Mathematics at the New York University School of Professional Studies, where he shares his passion for mathematics with students. Early in his career, he taught high school bilingual math in Brooklyn, leveraging his expertise to inspire and educate students from diverse backgrounds. Jian brings a wealth of experience to the classroom, combining his enthusiasm for teaching math with his extensive expertise in education.

Previously, he served as an Associate in Bilingual Education at the New York State Education Department’s Office of Bilingual Education and World Languages (OBEWL), leading initiatives that benefited English Language Learners (ELLs) and Multilingual Learners (MLs). In addition, as an Assessment Manager at the New York City Public Schools’ Office of Assessment, Jian oversaw major projects, including the Specialized High School Admissions Test (SHSAT).

Jian has contributed to educational reform as an EdReports Klawe Fellow and math reviewer, participating in the Multilingual Learner (ML) Pilot Review Team. He earned a B.A. in Pure Mathematics from City College of New York and completed his M.A. in Teacher of Mathematics 7–12 at New York University-Steinhardt, where he was a Math for America 2011 Fellow. He also holds an M.S. Ed. in Bilingual Childhood Education from City College of New York and an M.S. Ed. in Educational Leadership and Administration from The College of Saint Rose. Currently, he is pursuing an Ed.M. in Adult Learning and Leadership at Teachers College, Columbia University.

Jian is thrilled to join the Teacher Advisory Board (TAB) at Teaching Lab, where he believes the power of teacher voice plays a pivotal role in shaping impactful educational experiences. As an educator committed to advancing equity and excellence, he looks forward to collaborating with like-minded professionals to help ensure that Teaching Lab’s resources are high-quality and actionable. He is particularly drawn to the TAB’s focus on continuous improvement and equity, and he’s excited to contribute his perspectives to the development of tools that meet the diverse needs of educators and students.
