Teacher Advisory Board Member
Maggie Murphy
Currently, Maggie Murphy serves as a Judy Center Coordinator at Holabird Academy in Baltimore City Public Schools. She works toward improving the quality of life for the birth to five communities by ensuring children and families are prepared and ready for Kindergarten. Judy Centers provide wrap-around services such as case management, parenting classes, adult education, health screenings, playgroups and more.
Maggie believes strongly in empowering a child’s first teacher - their families. Judy Centers also provide support and professional development for early childhood educators to build all of the adults in a child’s early years. Her drive to bring change to the inequalities in the education system and provide students in under-resourced communities with a high quality and culturally responsive education is what led her to have a nine year career as an educator teaching Kindergarten and third grade in various elementary schools.
She has a Master's of Science in Early Childhood Educational Studies from Johns Hopkins University and a Bachelor of Arts in Public Relations and Advertising from DePaul University. During her time as an educator, she served on the Instructional Leadership Team, mentored early career educators, wrote curricula for the district, led professional development, and co-lead a professional learning community. In 2020, she was awarded the Model Teacher Distinction, an award given to teachers who go beyond their normal job description to accelerate student achievement, take risks, influence the practice of colleagues, support stakeholders, and display excellence and high standards in building their professional capacity.
At the core of her teaching philosophy is the belief that every student possesses unique talents and potential ready to be unlocked. She strives to cultivate a supportive and inclusive learning environment where students feel empowered to explore, question, and grow. By connecting curriculum content to real-world contexts and fostering a collaborative atmosphere, she aims to make learning both relatable and accessible to all learners.
She joined the Teacher Advisory Board because she is passionate about building teachers' capacity in a way that is meaningful and purposeful. Her diverse background in teaching and leadership roles equips her to provide valuable insights and perspectives to further the mission of TAB. Through collaboration with other educators, she aims to contribute to the development of effective professional learning that promotes student success and teacher empowerment. Amidst a nationwide teacher shortage and increasing departures from the profession, Maggie’s vision for the future of education includes equipping teachers with comprehensive support to enable them to maintain their effectiveness for their students in a sustainable manner.
By providing teachers with the necessary resources, mentorship, and impactful professional development opportunities, we can empower them to thrive in their roles, ultimately benefiting the students they serve and helping to retain talented educators within the field.
