Reading 360
Teaching Lab Can Support Your K-2 Literacy Work in TN Under the Reading 360 Initiative
Teaching Lab is an expert in supporting educators to use science-based strategies to ensure all students learn to read on grade-level.
Aligned with TN’s Reading 360 Initiative, Teaching Lab can support you with:
Using the TN Foundational Skills Instructional Practice Guide.
Unit Preparation/Lesson Preparation for knowledge building lessons and foundational skills lessons.
Engaging in sounds-first strategies for teaching foundational skills.
Intervention programming design, including resources and progress monitoring for students demonstrating significant reading deficiencies.
Intervention data use and planning including screener and diagnostic use.
Why Teaching Lab?
All of Teaching Lab’s foundational skills and early literacy professional learning is aligned with the best research on the science of reading and the importance of knowledge-building for reading comprehension.
Specifically, research shows that students learn to read by developing their capacity for: 1) word recognition (i.e., phonological awareness, decoding, sight recognition); and 2) language comprehension (i.e., background knowledge, vocabulary, language structures, verbal reasoning, and literacy knowledge) (Scarborough, 2001).
Scarborough’s rope is referenced in our PL as well as the importance of orthographic mapping and using a knowledge-building curriculum (Wexler, 2019). This research is aligned with TN’s Reading 360 initiative and Sounds-First instructional approach.
